Week 10 came to a successful end for me. I managed to get in all 36 miles of training although I did have to split my 8 mile run into about 3 days. This made it so that I ran at least 2 miles everyday leaving Monday as my only true “rest” day from running. One of my goals during this training is to keep my knees and hips healthy enough to continue to train without injury, especially since I have a history of injury with both. In order to make sure that I stay strong enough I have been very adamant about making sure that I fit in regular strength training as well as all of my runs. This is a mistake I have made before and I want to make sure that I can run this marathon when its time. This means in addition to fitting in all of my runs I am also doing at least 3 days of strength training. I have learned how to make the best out of the 30 minutes I spend at the gym. It helps that I have been going to Rivers Edge and pretty much have the gym to myself.
Since I don’t usually run with music on it gives me plenty of time to think. My runs are my me time (when I don’t take Frankie). When I have Frankie with me I can be seen talking to her most of the time. When I don’t have her with me there is nothing that can’t find its way into my mind. I love just thinking, listening to my surroundings and smelling all of the different smells. This week I thought it would be fun to jot down some of the things that cross my mind during a run. Here I go:
1) I can’t believe I used to smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day and now I’m about to run a marathon!
2) I should probably be more afraid of off leash dogs when I’m running than I am.
3) Janelle had a baby less than a year ago and she’s about to run a marathon!
4) My legs feel pretty good after Sundays run. Why am I not sore?
5) Am I the only crazy lady who looks forward to getting up and running at 5am on a work day? (Now the weekend is another story) Somehow I think that getting my run in before work makes work much better. On weekends I put it off but on weekdays its what I look forward to and gets me out of bed.
6) Janelle and I are like Kara and Shalane. I love them If you don’t know anything about them or their friendship you should.
So now that week 9 has come to an end week 10 has officially begun! This week is a light week or rest week in our training :). I think Janelle and I were both really needing this. Week 10 is only a total of 19 miles! That’s the least amount of miles I will have run since before I started training for this race so I actually think it will be difficult for me to keep my milage that low. I have to admit it felt great to sleep in today! I slept until 8:15 which I never do and thought of this:
Todays run was much different than last weeks run. Since this week is a light week the run was only 7 miles. Janelle and I decided that we would both like to sleep in and run on our own time separately. I got up and kept myself busy doing nothing around the house and had to force myself to put on my running clothes and get out the door. I really wanted to wait to do it until later in the day but I knew that there was no way I would actually do it if I waited too long. So I put on my camelbak and headed out. I know almost exactly where I need to go in either direction to get in whatever distance I’m aiming for but today I couldn’t make up my mind! So I went with a good old standby. I played music while I ran, something I haven’t done in quite some time. I don’t wear headphones though because I want to make sure I can hear the traffic (and animals coming after me). Nothing interesting happened. My calves were tight and I think it was from walking in flip flops all day Saturday.
Janelle got to go for a nice family run/bike ride. She pushed Dex in his stroller while Rob rode his bike along with them.
Needless to say todays run was much different than normal. I’m looking forward to challenging myself to sticking to the low milage this week and being revived for next Sundays 21 miles!
